trip Overview
Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek is a combined experience of Tamang cultures along with an adventurous journey around the Tamang hinterlands. Most of the trekking routes of Nepal follow the trail running through the teahouses established for tourists. But, the Tamang Heritage trek threaded along the routes running through different communities which provides us the opportunity to experience the cultures and lifestyles of locals closely.
Mainly, Sherpa, Tamang & Gurung are Nepalese mountain dwellers and native to the Langtang region. The community sticks to its traditional life while preserving its culture, dresses, arts, and artisan crafts. We can be amused by the music generated by local traditional instruments like Damfu and Tungana during every overnight stay. One can’t stop appreciating amazing crafts, and relics carved on windows, doors, Stupas, and monasteries. On reaching every community, the first thing we will witness is prayer flags atop every house. We can experience traditional home cooking along with tasting authentic Tibetan cuisines while staying in the wooden houses of smiling locals. Walking along quiet trails, we can witness the scattering of prayer flags, prayer wheels, and Chhortens & Mani walls symbolizing Tamang culture.
Another amazing thing that attracts you to this Tamang heritage trek is the amazing landscapes decorated by several ice-capped mountains. We can see mountains like Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Paldor Peak, etc but Nakthali is the best viewpoint. You will not want to miss the jaw-dropping view of sunrise amidst beautiful mountain massifs. Also, walking around the Langtang conservation area, we can witness many endangered animals like Red Pandas, Deer, Himalayan bears, etc. If you want to have an adventurous and cultural journey on well-off tourist trails, this is a perfect trek for you.

Today’s walk begins by descending to Thangbuchet, walking on the edge of a lovely river. After lunch, the trail heads up again, across a hanging bridge and climbing to Tatopani, your stop for the night. The town’s name literally means ‘hot water. Unsurprisingly, here you can enjoy the natural hot springs, with water that comes straight out of the ground. Locals believe that the waters have a healing quality, and they will certainly ease away any aches and pains from the trek.

Today, the trail ascends to Nagthali Danda (3,300 m./ 10,826 ft.), a high, open grassland with amazing views of the Himalayas. Stop at the delightful Brimdang village for lunch en route, then continue up to Nagthali Danda. On arrival, stop for a masala chiya (tea), prepared by the gompa’s caretaker. Then, continue down to Thuman, a Tamang village with friendly people who love to sing and dance. You might even be invited to join the inn.

Today’s walk begins along a flatter section of trail, then descends to Timure. It follows part of the old trade route to Tibet, and in fact, Tibet is not far away—just three hour’s walk. However, it’s not possible to walk across the border these days, and there’s a heavy police presence along the roads in this area. After lunch, the trail continues to Briddim, another Tamang village, where you’ll stay in a local home for a truly unique and authentic experience. All accommodation, lodgings, and food are offered at local houses on a rotational basis, so you can be sure that your stay is benefitting the whole community and not just one or two enterprising families (as is sometimes the case with hotels and lodges).
