trip Overview

Upper Dolpo Trek – Exploring Nepal’s Hidden Himalayan Gem

The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and untouched trekking routes, located near the Tibetan border. This extraordinary journey unveils the pristine beauty and ancient heritage of a land that remained isolated from the rest of the world for centuries. Once restricted to foreigners, Upper Dolpo was opened for trekking in the late 1980s, and even today, a special permit is required to explore its mystical landscapes. The major highlights of this trek include crossing the high Himalayan pass of Nangdola La (5,151 m), visiting the 800-year-old Shey Gompa Monastery, and witnessing the deep blue serenity of Phoksundo Lake.

Organized by Nepal Dream Path Treks, the adventure begins with a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu, followed by a flight to Juphal via Nepalgunj. The trail then meanders through the scenic expanse of Shey Phoksundo National Park and ascends toward the rugged highlands of Dolpo. From the top of the passes, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Dolpo Valley, Dhaulagiri, and surrounding snow-capped peaks. The landscape gradually transforms into vibrant hues of red, brown, and gray, while fluttering prayer flags add a touch of spiritual calm to the vast wilderness.

Upper Dolpo is home to the sacred Crystal Mountain, which draws numerous pilgrims each year. Despite its remoteness and linguistic isolation—where few locals speak Nepali—the region offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Himalayan life. This trek promises an unparalleled blend of natural splendor, cultural richness, and spiritual serenity. The best seasons to undertake the journey are summer and monsoon, while winter is not recommended due to heavy snowfall and extreme conditions.

Memorable Upper Dolpo Trip

2023

We have just completed the Upper Dolpo Trek under the guidance of the Nepal Dream path Treks and the trip was so memorable and amazing our guide Damodar, helped us in each and every situation during the trek. He was so responsible towards us and brief all day. Nepal Dream Path is simply the best company that can fulfill your desire to witness the natural & rural beauty of Nepal. f you are looking for a basic trek or a complex adventure, they will meet your every expectation. Five stars are not high enough for their rating.

Trekking in Upper Dolpo

2018

We recently returned from Upper Dolpo 22 days trek and I can honestly say that it was one of the best experiences of my life. We did this trek with Nepal Dream Path Treks and Expedition. We did this trek with Nepal Dream Path Treks & Expedition and they manage everything we need for the from our arrival in Kathmandu.  Our guide Damodar was just amazing, a true professional and one of the loveliest people I have ever met. Porters are really great, they even have a smiling face when they were lugging 25 kilos of gear. I can recommend this company specially Damodar pyakurel as a guide and Tek, Min and Furi as a porter for this trek.
