trip Overview

Rara trek is one of the most beautiful and adventurous treks to the north-west side of Nepal. The journey is an ultimate roller coaster ride to the beautiful Rara Lake. Rara Lake located in the Mugu district of Nepal is the largest lake in the country. It is the most beautiful part of the entire Rara National Park and covers a total area of 6.11 sq miles including surrounding wetlands. The lake lies at an elevation of 2,990m and the water surface area is 10.8 km². The colorful pine forest surrounds this blue lake from all directions. This beautiful lake is home to different species of fishes, water birds, and endemic frogs too.

Rara Trek starts with the flight from the Cultural and Traditional city Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is the business city of Nepal as it lies at the Nepal-India border. From Nepalgunj, the journey continues with the short and scenic flight to Jumla. We can observe drastic changes in the landscapes, altitude & weather during the flight to Jumla. The culture, tradition, lifestyle, and appearance of the people will also change. Jumla is the main trading center and gateway to the wild north-west of Nepal. Jumla has its own historical value as it was an important kingdom during the time of the unification of Nepal. It is also famous for Marsi Dhan (rice); it is believed that the royal family of Nepal used to import Marsi rice from Jumla.

From Jumla, it will take 4 days of trek to reach Rara Lake. The real journey will start now as we follow the off the beaten trails passing through many small settlements, ridges, and pastures. This is the trek to the remote area and the teahouses are not well managed. That’s why most of the tourists prefer this trek to be a camping based trek. Camping in the middle of nowhere with a small family exchanging the stories and experiences of life is really fun. The glorious views of mountain peaks like API and Saipal and green giant hills from different view-points make this trek perfect. The communities of this region are mixed as they are inhabited by mixed ethnic groups. However, most of the populations are Brahmin and Chhetri. The mixed community will give us the taste of mixed culture, tradition, and lifestyle.
